Welcome to the Regional Training on the Scientific Basis of Codex: Focus on Data Generation and Submission for Standards Setting
This capacity-building workshop, organized under the umbrella of the EU-EAC MARKUP II Programme and the Codex Trust Fund (CTF), is designed to strengthen the East African Community’s (EAC) ability to actively engage in Codex standard-setting processes. The program—implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and supported by the EAC Secretariat—aims to enhance regional harmonization of food standards, technical regulations, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures to improve international market access for priority value chains.
This Training of Trainers (ToT), scheduled from 23–25 July 2025 in Zanzibar, Tanzania, addresses key challenges faced by the region in data generation and submission—critical elements for the effective domestication and application of Codex standards. It also aligns with the broader strategic goals of Codex capacity development and data-driven food regulatory decision-making in Africa.
Led by subject-matter experts from the Global Food Regulatory Science Society (GFoRSS), the training will equip participants with tools and knowledge to:
-
Understand the scientific underpinnings of Codex standards;
-
Generate and submit reliable data (e.g. to GEMS/Food);
-
Navigate risk analysis frameworks and Codex negotiation mechanisms;
-
Contribute to evidence-based regulatory processes and regional Codex positions.
